Blog Post #3

My personal experience with reading both Persepolis and March#3 is how relatable yet distinguishable the author Satrapi and Saccos’ stories can be. At some parts in the passage Satrapi states “You must base everything on these three rules: behave well, speak well, act well” (Satrapi, 2000, p. 47). Readings like this really make me feel connected with the passage based from situations I’ve experience before. The visual representation of this novel also adds to the already established relationship with the story making it seem even more real to the audience. Its one thing to hear what goes around in world than than to see it with your own eyes. Personally, I think sometimes we as individuals can be ignorant to global issues that are going on in our world due to the fact we are not the ones having to experience it. This relates back to the essay I chose which was titled “Migration” by Sacco. Learning about war through a graphic novel was really interesting to me because the author makes such uncomfortable topics less uncomfortable to talk about. Sort of in the same way Satrapi did with her novel, I really loved how Sacco made the book really interesting and thought-provoking. Although it sort of appears to be a light-hearted read, it gets into some serious stuff at times and really gives you some perspective which it something my table discussed.

In regards to the three articles in d2l, I believe it made me appreciate comic journalism much more due to the fact like how I mentioned it before, it made real life situations in the world, easier for people to openly talk about. Especially with how popular comic books has become in our generation, the authors saw that opportunity for exposure and took it to shine light on un-talked about world issues, that necessarily the media won’t wan’t to cover. For that reasoning I think the essay I focused on in Journalism was similar to the news article I found on the same subject, and strongly support comics or graphic novel format to bring more awareness to these surpassed world issues. Ultimately, my thoughts about the Madaya Mom, and ABC News International’s collaboration with Marvel Comics to report on war I think is great.
