Blog Post #2

Hello, so the documentary that I decided to watch for this assignment was a documentary called “A Killer on Floor 32.” A Killer on Floor 32 takes you inside the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history using never before seen footage, and exclusive access to tell the story of that tragic night in Las Vegas. Not only did it create awareness to one of the biggest social issues in society regarding active shooters but also gave the audience exclusive detail on how the active shooters manage to pull off this terrible incident. Although the documentary did not provide a straight forward solution to active shootings in America, it did provide the viewers with context on the incident and how the mass shooting manages to happen behind the scenes.

Hopefully, we as a society can learn from this dreadful experience based on the fact that it was mentioned in the documentary that the active shooter was able to manage to sneak past security into the main building. The documentary I believe did a good job on creating awareness, in which is the first step towards creating change. I do feel the documentary could of at least provided the viewers with some possible solution on ways to prevent active shootings or at least ways to distinguish individuals who may show warning signs for potential mass shooters.

Incidents like this are so difficult to prepare for because nobody has control over the actions that other people decide to take. Thus, the documentary does a perfect job with the cinematography, images, and interviews to really help us understand how terrifying and uncontrollable this incident truly was. The emotions portray through this documentary helped the film build a stronger connection to the audience on a more personal level touching sensitive subjects like a family death.

I felt like the documentary was not biased at all. The film “A Killer on Floor 32” never was for or against the possession of firearms and whether it should be banned in the United States. Personal opinions were kept strictly to themselves. Additionally, the documentary did do a good job of providing a mostly objective viewpoint showcasing sides from all individuals involved in this mass shooting, not just the victims.

Ultimately, the documentary I chose, I felt was indeed measured for impact due to the fact I felt like the filmmakers’ contribution to social change was really for the better and the intentions they had to capitalize on that potential, were as well. This mass shooting in Las Vegas was such a huge event that it needed to more awareness in our country due to the lack of involvement on our governments part to be able to do something about possession of firearms and active shootings. Films like “Sweatshop: Deadly Fashion and Parts Unknown” using reality television and food/travel shows as a form of journalism are great because in a way it attracts more attention and encourages visitors to watch for a certain part and stay for another.
